Many heartbroken couples these days have become convinced that they must live out their lives with the huge void of being forever childless. There is now wonderful news for these couples who have been living with dashed hopes and dreams.
Pregnancy success does not have to be difficult
At Functional Medicine Center, Dr. David Ramsey has identified two major factors of modern times that commonly interfere with the natural process of fertility and conception. The first factor is toxic overload in either the father or mother or both. The second factor is from dysfunction and imbalance of the delicate hormonal patterns between the estrogen and progesterone fluctuations during the woman’s month long cycle. This is further complicated by dysfunction of the adrenal and thyroid glands which contribute greatly to overall hormone balance and function.
Unfortunately, very few doctors understand the important role of the adrenals in relation to the sex hormones and other important biochemical body functions. It is also very uncommon for most doctors to address the growing concern for chemical and heavy metal toxicities which greatly interfere with many natural body processes, including fertility.
Before this new natural approach to treating infertility was available, couples were forced to seek expensive medical fertility treatments that did not offer much hope for high success rates. Even if the
Two common therapeutic agents used in medical infertility treatments are Gonadotropin injections and the drug, Clomiphene. Gonadotropin injections cost somewhere between $2,000 to $5,000 per month. Clomiphene needs to be taken for up to 6 months before conception occurs or changing to another treatment. The cost for these pills is at least $50 per month. The side effects of Clomiphene include headaches, visual disturbances, hot flashes, cramping, bloating, and vaginal dryness. The success rate of these two treatments ranges between 20-60%. Treatments also include many doctor visits, ultrasound exams of ovaries, and often multiple visits for artificial insemination. Surgery may help correct blocked fallopian tubes, or remove endometriosis, fibroids, or ovarian cysts. The success rate for these surgical procedures ranges between 40-60%. Most infertility treatments are not covered by insurance. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) estimates that the average cost of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle in the U.S. to be $12,400. Many couples may need up to three IVF cycles to become pregnant.
At Functional Medicine Center Dr. Ramsey will start the process of discovery by having the couple fill out several health questionnaires that will lead to uncovering the causative factors of the involved body systems contributing to the dysfunction of infertility. In most cases lab testing will commence and can include blood tests, saliva adrenal testing, and urine testing for multiple categories of toxic substances. For toxicity testing the preferred lab test is Toxic Effects CORE from Metametrix Labs. This highly comprehensive toxicity screen tests for 6 different categories of toxic exposure: PCBs, Bisphenol A (BPA), Chlorinated Pesticides, Organophosphates, Phthalates and Parabens, and Volatile Solvents. Indeed many of these toxins are known to be causative agents in not only infertility, but many other chronic dysfunctions and modern diseases, including many types of cancer. If high levels of particular toxins are detected, highly effective natural nutritional supplement programs will be initiated for a month or more depending on the severity of toxic overload.
Besides these tests, Dr. Ramsey may also have the woman do a month long saliva hormonal panel that will evaluate and track the woman’s estrogen and progesterone fluctuations. A comprehensive Adrenal Stress saliva test will usually be given as well along with instructions for doing a home thyroid evaluation. The results of these tests lead to incorporating very successful adrenal/thyroid regeneration therapies and a hormonal regulating treatment called the Progesterone Augmentation Program. This is a program using timed increasing and decreasing levels of a natural progesterone supplement that have been proven time after time for regulating a woman’s estrogen and progesterone cycles and quite often leading to successful conception.

The purpose of performing these lab tests and implementing a recommended therapeutic treatment protocol is to improve the overall health of the body. This may improve the likelihood of achieving successful conception.
